Hardtack

(a.k.a. “Teeth Dullers”, “Sheet Iron”, “Flour Tiles” “Hard Bread”, “Ship’s Biscuit” & more)

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1 tsp. salt

Water

  1. Preheat oven to 400° F.
  2. For every cup of flour, add one teaspoon salt and just enough water to hold mixture together (as little water as possible).
  3. Roll out the dough to ¼” thickness and cut into 3”x 3” squares.
  4. Put at least 16 holes about ½” apart in squares, making certain to completely pierce the dough.
  5. Place squares on cookie sheet, place in oven and bake until edges are brown (20-25 minutes).
  6. Allow all the moisture to dry out before removing from the oven.
  7. Store in an airtight container.

When properly prepared and all the moisture is removed, these will keep forever (well, close).  You also can add some herbs for flavoring.
